So over the past month and a half I’ve been a little busy & haven’t written reviews for everything I’ve seen. I’ll go ahead & tell you that these reviews won’t be in my normal format, they are are just paragraph long reviews with a rating. So here are 4 quick reviews for films I saw in that time.
An exciting new filmmaker has emerged in Corey Finley. Finley here crafts a fascinating study of remorse & the human emotion. With fantastic sound design & score. As well as great performances by Olivia Cooke, Anya Taylor-Joy & Anton Yelchin. Cooke & Yelchin are the easy standouts here. With them both having maybe the best scene of the film, which contains them bantering back & forth about his gun. It deeply saddens me that we lost Anton Yelchin way too soon, because it’s performances like these that I always looked forward to from him.
Mute features solid performances from Paul Rudd & Alexander Skarsgård. The film also builds quite a weird & disturbing tone throughout. Yet becomes muddled & over-congested. The film does introduce some interesting ideas, yet doesn’t build on them much. Basically “Mute” brings nice visuals & 2 solid performances.
Finally a good mainstream comedy! “Game Night” is full of a great comedic ensemble cast, with a scene stealing performance from Jesse Plemons. “Game Night” also brings some good direction in a comedy from John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein. Their direction is really put on show with a one-shot chase scene with the films protagonists trying to steal an egg. I can’t wait to see what Francis Daley & Goldstein do with the upcoming Flash movie.
“The Ritual” brings a great ensemble cast, that brings great chemistry together from scene 1. “The Ritual” takes horror clichés & does interesting things with them. From chilling dream sequences to an amazing creature design. The Ritual is worth a watch.
